Happy Childhood

Illustration is "Monsters Love Ice Cream" by Amy Kaufman.

If I behave, if I behave,
My mom will give me something sweet!
Something sweet, something grave,
Something served with human meat!

If I make my messy bed,
I can pop human’s head!

If I mop my tracks of mud,
I can drink some fresh-spilled blood!

If I clean my messy room,
I can go wreak death and doom!

If I smile and stand up tall,
I can eat them, one and all!

Ice cream cones with human bones,
Sweets and meats are what I crave!
Those are the treats my mommy owns--
So I’ll behave, so I’ll behave!

Mountain Monster

Illustration is 'Mountainscape' by Casey Fallon.
Check out his blog here: http://www.cfallonart.blogspot.ca/

The sun is truly setting on those humans who live in my mountain.

Their castle sits right in my sights, all those loose stones piled uselessly upon each other.

Many years ago, that flat place supported a meadow. Ice crystals glittered there in the winters, wildflowers bloomed there in the summers. In springtime, sheep with sure feet and curved horns climbed down to raise lambs amongst the brambles. Fish used to splash about in that river.

Now the lapping of oars is the only sound that comes from the water. A weaker kind of sheep bleat hopelessly in slaughtering-pens. Only stone towers grow on that flat these days.

They call me a ‘monster,’ those humans who live in my mountain. They’re perfect hypocrites, the lot of them. I will only to do to them what they’ve already done to the fish and the sheep.

            Every creature eats to live.
